Russian Submarine Kazan Begins Naval Tests

Russia's modernized Project 855 Yasen class (NATO code: Severodvinsk) submarine Kazan (K-561) began sea tests in the White Sea. The nuclear submarine's underwater systems and mechanisms will be tested.

After the completion of the trials, which will be attended by ships and submarines belonging to the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet, the platforms will return to their permanent base in Severodvinsk.

Launched in 2017, Kazan has a low acoustic. Similar to nuclear ballistic missile submarines, the submarine can fire P-800 Onyx (NATO code: SS-N-26) cruise missiles from launchers and can dive to a depth of 520 meters.

Kazan is expected to join the Russian Navy in late 2020 to serve in the Northern Fleet.
