Korea to Use Lithium-Ion Batteries in Submarines

The Republic of Korea is in the process of developing a lithium-ion battery for the Jang Bogo-III Class electric submarine. Korea, which announced in October that work will begin on the lithium-ion battery prototype, aims to double the duration of the platforms' underwater stay. Korean submarines already use lead acid batteries. In the first half of 2021, the battery will be in production and Jang Bogo-III class submarines will be delivered in 2026, it said.

The Jang Bogo-III Class, also called the KSS-II, is known as the next generation electric submarine developed by Korea-based Daewoo Shipbuilding, Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

The KSS-II will be the first submarine equipped with a lithium-ion battery
