The joint Golden Eagle military exercise, bringing together Turkish Special Forces and Egyptian airborne units, has opened the door to a new era in regional defence. Held after years of silence, this field activity synchronises the joint operational procedures of the two countries and adds strategic depth to military cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The significance of the leaders’ summit in Ankara somewhat overshadowed the important military movements taking place within the framework of developing defence cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean. In February this year, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan travelled to Cairo for an official visit and signed a military cooperation agreement with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Last month, Chief of the General Staff General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu and Egyptian Chief of Staff General Ahmed Fathi Khalifa met again in Cairo and took important steps toward the actual launch of Turkish-Egyptian military cooperation.

As the process for the joint exercise was set in motion, theoretical conferences on communication procedures, military protocols and joint operational procedures were held earlier this month. Preparations for joint mission execution between the two armies have thus been largely completed. On Wednesday, 8 July, the Golden Eagle joint military exercise officially began with the participation of Turkish Special Forces. This activity, held after many years, is seen as the beginning of a new era for regional security.
Strategic Cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean and New Defence Projects
The exercise, which is a first in modern Turkish-Egyptian military relations, is expected to evolve into broader joint exercises involving naval, air and land elements in the near future, contributing to security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The exercise, which involves Turkish Special Forces, Egyptian airborne units and Thunderbolt special forces, is being closely watched by regional countries as it helps develop the two nations’ joint operational capabilities and lays the groundwork for future military cooperation. This joint activity, which carries great geopolitical significance, is not only an important symbol of strategic rapprochement between Türkiye and Egypt but will also contribute to placing political and economic relations on a firmer footing.
