Saab has received a new order worth approximately SEK 2.9 billion from Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to continue development work on its next-generation fighter aircraft. The contract covers the 2026-2028 period, with options for 2029 and 2030.
The order includes flying and ground-based demonstrators, advanced studies, and the development of future system concepts for both manned and unmanned platforms. The company’s previously unveiled Saab A3-001 unmanned combat aircraft concept was one of the efforts falling under this broader scope. The work centers on developing and demonstrating new technologies that will be central to the future system.
Next-Generation Fighter Aircraft and National Capabilities
According to Saab, the programme strengthens Sweden’s national capabilities in systems integration, autonomy, signature adaptation, propulsion, digital development and production capabilities. The company states that the work also contributes to building competence, reducing technical risk, and creating freedom of action for Sweden’s future choices in air combat.
Lars Tossman, head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, said the company was pleased that FMV continued to show confidence in Saab through the new contract. Tossman noted that the work was important for developing technologies that will be central to the future system.
The order builds on the contracts Saab signed with FMV in 2024 and 2025.
