The third Scorpene Class submarine being constructed at India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has been launched on 31 January. Named INS Karanj, the submarine is planned to be delivered to the Indian Navy in 2019.

Under a $3.46 billion technology transfer contract signed in 2005, six submarines are being built in collaboration with DCNS of France. The first vessel, INS Kalvari, was delivered in September 2017 and commissioned in December 2017 while the second submarine INS Khanderi is slated to enter service in mid-2018 after completing sea trials.
