The first serial Project 955A (Borei-A) strategic nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarine Knyaz Oleg was floated out.
The platform, which took its power from the nuclear reactor, was launched at a ceremony at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk. Knyaz Oleg, which will be equipped with strategic munitions such as the Bulava ballistic missile, will be deployed in the Pacific Fleet.
The Borei-A Class Knyaz Vladimir submarine, developed as part of the project 955A modernization program, was recently commissioned.
Borei-class submarines can be equipped with 16 Bulava ballistic missiles. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Borei-A-class submarines have quieter and improved manoeuvrability than their variants.
