February 13, 2019Poland to get HIMARS for $414 Million
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has announced his government will sign a deal to purchase the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, through a Foreign Military Sales deal. on Feb. 13.
“We need to have a strong, modern military. The armoured, artillery and rocket forces … are part of and will contribute to developing [it],” Morawiecki said.
The Polish Ministry of Defence said in a statement that the contract will be worth $414 million. Poland’s first HIMARS division is to comprise 18 combat-ready launchers and two launchers intended for training activities, the ministry said.
HIMARS system has been armed with the GMLRS Missiles, the range of which is defined as 80 kilometres, and ATACMS missiles, capable of striking targets at distances of up to 300 kilometres. Similar effectors are also applied in case of the tracked-chassis MLRS system. The US Army also plans to pursue further development of the MLRS rocket systems.
