Belgium has sat down with the Netherlands to fill a twenty year gap in its air defence capability, signing a critical cooperation agreement for the procurement of 10 NASAMS air defence systems. Announced at the NATO Summit in Ankara, this strategic partnership aims to strengthen Europe’s layered air defence architecture while prioritising logistical efficiency in the procurement process.
The Belgian government has officially announced its plans to acquire modern NASAMS systems to protect its population and critical infrastructure from aerial threats. The cooperation agreement signed with the Netherlands on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara covers the procurement of 10 NASAMS systems.
A Stronger Air Defence After 20 Years
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken emphasised that the agreement will address a critical shortfall in the country’s defence capacity. He said, “After twenty years, Belgium will rebuild its own robust air defence capability through this joint procurement. This step is vital for the protection of our people and critical infrastructure.”
Contract Negotiations Ongoing
KONGSBERG, the system’s manufacturer, has stated that it will not make any further announcements until a firm contract is signed. The company confirmed that contract negotiations are still ongoing and that the official signing is expected later in 2026.
KONGSBERG recently added ZONE 5 to its portfolio to enhance its capabilities in defence technologies.
