Norwegian defence company KONGSBERG has launched a new munitions push in the global market by acquiring a 90 percent stake in Zone 5 Technologies, a firm frequently linked to the US Air Force’s ERAM programme.
With the legal approval process from US regulatory authorities now complete, the California‑based missile manufacturer brings its budget‑friendly, high‑volume serial production capability under the KONGSBERG umbrella. This move is a direct response to the need for “large‑scale and rapid munition supply” that has emerged from recent global conflicts.
Rusty Dagger and White Spike systems head for international markets
The integration of the developed systems into KONGSBERG’s portfolio will allow the company to offer much more flexible solutions across both air defence and strike segments. Two key systems developed by Zone 5 Technologies stand out: the Rusty Dagger long‑range strike missile and the White Spike air defence missile.
KONGSBERG President and CEO Eirik Lie, highlighting Europe’s need for high‑volume munitions, made the following statement after the acquisition: “Recent conflicts have clearly shown how important high‑volume defence capabilities are. That is exactly what Europe needs. Zone 5 has a proven track record in rapid production and high scalability. We will support the company’s international expansion.”
Strong position in Pentagon programmes to continue
The Norwegian company will continue to operate as an independent subsidiary after the acquisition, maintaining its active position in the US defence market. The company also holds significant contracts under the US Air Force’s AGM‑188 FAMM (Family of Affordable, Mass‑produced Missiles) programme and its export variant, ERAM (Extended Range Attack Munition).
In addition, joint projects with other Pentagon‑affiliated military commands, the Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) will continue.
Under the deal – whose financial value has been kept confidential by the parties – KONGSBERG has acquired 90 percent of Zone 5. The company’s founder and CEO, Thomas Akers, and the existing management team will remain in their roles while also continuing as shareholders in the company after the closing.
