Multi-spectrum concealment technology, designed to make soldiers harder to detect by thermal sensors on the modern battlefield, has now been turned into a poncho that a single soldier can carry. Announced by Saab, the Barracuda Poncho provides static stealth against sensors by aligning the soldier’s thermal signature with the natural radiation in the surrounding environment.
Sweden-based Saab has unveiled its new product, the Barracuda Poncho, which brings the company’s expertise in signature management and military textiles down to the individual soldier level. The product was developed to boost personnel survivability in combat zones where advanced surveillance systems and unmanned aerial vehicles are widely used.
Multi-Spectrum Signature Management
While traditional camouflage systems mostly focus on concealment in the visual spectrum, this new solution from Saab covers a wider portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The Barracuda Poncho masks body heat by creating a physical barrier against infrared and thermal imaging systems. This technology allows personnel to stay hidden from electronic surveillance in different lighting and environmental conditions.
Lightweight Design and Operational Use
Made from ultra-lightweight fabric to minimize the burden on soldiers, the system can be deployed within seconds. Thanks to its multi-purpose design, the product can be used not only as wearable protection but also as a static cover to hide ammunition or observation points. With this move, Saab aims to make signature management—previously used on large platforms—a standard piece of gear at the soldier level.
