Delivery Schedule delayed for USS Doris Miller (CVN 81)

Due to bottlenecks in the Ford-class next-generation aircraft carrier program, the delivery of the USS Doris Miller (CVN 81) has been delayed by 24 months, with a new projected delivery date of February 2034. This critical development, reflected in the Navy’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget documents, extends the ship’s total construction timeline to 15 years, primarily due to physical space constraints at the shipyard and production line saturation.

Shipyard Capacity and the Ripple Effect

According to data obtained by USNI News from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), the previously targeted delivery date of February 2032 for CVN 81 is no longer feasible. Statements from the shipbuilder indicate that the primary factor limiting module production capacity is the high intensity of work on its predecessor, the USS Enterprise (CVN 80). This situation has created a “ripple effect” during the dry-docking phase of the USS Doris Miller, pushing the entire assembly schedule forward.

Future Technologies and Strategic Timeline

Despite the delay, NNS reported that steel fabrication and pre-outfitting of the ship’s structural units are continuing without interruption. During this extended period, the integration of high-tech systems—most notably the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) and the Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG), which are the hallmarks of the Ford class—will be monitored with precision. The keel-laying ceremony, scheduled for later this year, remains on track.

The setbacks are not limited to the Doris Miller; the delivery of the USS Enterprise, the third ship in the series, has also slipped from July 2030 to March 2031. These delays necessitate a revision of “carrier continuity” plans within global naval projections. The potential gap in the U.S. Navy’s operational power may force a reconsideration of the service lives of the aging Nimitz-class carriers and a shift in modernization schedules.
