A subcontracting agreement covering technical support and technology transfer has been officially signed to enable the local production of K2PL main battle tanks, which are set to modernize the Polish Army’s armored capabilities. The partnership between Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) and Zakłady Mechaniczne “BUMAR-ŁABĘDY” S.A. is significant, as it paves the way for establishing a modern assembly line on Polish soil capable of producing advanced heavy armored vehicles.
Technology Transfer and Production Capacity
The signing ceremony, held in Warsaw on April 27, marks a strategic milestone for Poland’s defense industry. Under the agreement, South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem will provide supervision, technical support, and personnel training for the production line to be set up at BUMAR-ŁABĘDY facilities. The effort goes beyond simple assembly—it also includes building a comprehensive maintenance, service, and logistics infrastructure for the K2PL platform and its supporting vehicles.
Integration of Local Industry
The project also brings Polish engineering solutions directly into the system. Companies within the Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), including PCO S.A. and Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne S.A. (WZE), will increase the share of locally produced electronic and optical systems in the tanks. This localization effort aligns with NATO’s goals for logistical sustainability, enabling armored units to operate more independently and respond faster during allied missions.
Service Support for K2GF Tanks
A second agreement was also signed during the event, covering service support for the K2GF (Gap Filler) tanks already in service. This step is important, as it supports Poland’s goal of localizing maintenance and repair capabilities to ensure operational continuity for its armed forces.
“Our goal is not only to provide modern weapons to the Polish Armed Forces, but also to permanently strengthen the capabilities of Poland’s defense industry in producing, maintaining, and developing these systems over the long term,” said Arkadiusz Bąk, First Vice President of PGZ S.A.
Strategic Importance and Government Message
Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, announced the development on social media, highlighting its importance for national security and NATO’s defense architecture. As he emphasized, the new production line will act as a kind of industrial stronghold, reinforcing Poland’s strategic position in the region.
