A fully modular crew cabin and advanced sensor integration—set to fundamentally transform the operational capability of the Australian Army—are turning the next-generation Bushmaster into one of the most agile platforms on the modern battlefield. Under a new contract valued at AUD 750 million, Thales Australia is activating its production line to deliver 268 technologically evolved Bushmaster armored personnel carriers.

Technological Evolution and Enhanced Firepower
This investment by the Australian Government goes beyond a simple vehicle procurement. It aims to fully adapt the Bushmaster platform to the demands of an increasingly digital battlespace. The next-generation vehicles will be manufactured at the Bendigo facility in Victoria. Additionally, they will feature reinforced add-on armor and an optimized chassis, capable of supporting roof-mounted heavy weapon systems. This marks a significant upgrade over their predecessors.
Key features of the new configuration include:
- Modular Cabin Architecture: A fully modular crew compartment that can be rapidly reconfigured according to operational needs.
- Digital Integration: The ability to autonomously or semi-autonomously detect threats through the integration of a wide range of sensors and effector systems.
- Enhanced Mobility: Increased towing capacity alongside next-generation communication interfaces.
Export Potential and Regional Industrial Capacity
To date, more than 1,300 vehicles have been produced at Thales’ Bendigo facility, with exports to eight countries including the Netherlands, Japan, and the United Kingdom. With this new contract, the addition of a left-hand drive option to standard production is expected to significantly boost the Bushmaster’s competitiveness. Furthermore, this will enhance export potential in global markets.
Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice President for Land and Air Systems at Thales, подчеркнул the importance of the agreement, describing it as a tangible example of strong collaboration between government and industry.
Production of the new-generation Bushmaster is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the project expected to support more than 290 skilled jobs in the region. This investment not only strengthens Australia’s defense industrial supply chain but also reinforces the Bushmaster’s status as a highly survivable armored personnel carrier on the battlefield.
