The United Kingdom and France have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify a successor to the Meteor missile. The Meteor missile is widely regarded as one of the most capable air-to-air munitions in service today. In this context, the Meteor Missile Successor project stands out as a significant step in defense cooperation between the two countries. Furthermore, as part of the Lancaster House 2.0 commitments, this initiative reflects their shared determination to strengthen European security and NATO’s military capabilities.
Under the agreement, a 12-month joint study will be conducted to analyze the future air combat environment. During this period, expert teams will assess potential aerial threats and develop next-generation missile concepts. They will also determine the technologies to be used within the system. By the end of the study, the goal is to establish a concrete roadmap for the development phase.

Building on the Success of the Meteor Missile
The new project is planned to build upon the success of the Meteor missile, which is currently in service on the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon aircraft and the French Air Force’s Rafale fighter jets. Moreover, the collaboration aims to elevate the already advanced capabilities of the Meteor. This missile is considered a benchmark in European air-to-air missile technology. The new project seeks to raise these capabilities to an even higher level.
The initiative is being carried out within the framework of the revived “Entente Industrielle” (Industrial Cooperation). This structure aims to reduce duplication in defense projects and increase industrial efficiency. In addition, a joint Complex Weapons Portfolio Office to be established under the project will enable more coordinated management of missile programs. It will also evaluate potential opportunities for cooperation with other countries.
UK Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, Luke Pollard, emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement, stating: “In a new era of threats, we are increasing our cooperation with our friends and allies. This agreement marks significant progress in delivering our Lancaster House 2.0 commitments and demonstrates the strength of the UK–France defense partnership. By working with France on next-generation air-to-air missiles, we are strengthening NATO’s capabilities and European security—this is exactly the kind of close cooperation needed to deter adversaries in a new era of threats.”
