Japan Nikkei says Tokyo is taking a look at getting electronic-warfare aircraft. Daily claims that Boeing’s EA-18G is one of the options being explored.
The news outlet says the Defence Ministry plans to officially put in a request to buy these specialized aircraft in the Mid-Term Defence Program at the end of the year. Once approved, the acquisition will take place between 2019 to 2023.
Japan looks to deploy electronic-warfare aircraft that can neutralize enemy air defences and command systems remotely, blurring the line between strict self-defence and offensive base-strike capability.
The country is exploring options including Boeing's EA-18G fighter jet — nicknamed the “Growler” — which emits large radio pulses to jam radar and communication systems. The EA-18G also carries missiles to knock out radar facilities.
