Japan has commissioned the submarine rescue ship JS Chiyoda (ASR 404) in a ceremony held on 20 March in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan.
Launched in October 2016, JS Chiyoda replaced the former JS Chiyoda (AS 405) which was decommissioned on the same day. The 128 metre-long ship has a beam of 20 metres and a displacement of 6,173 tons. Powered by two 19,500 hp diesel engines, JS Chiyoda can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots. The vessel was built by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) and cost about $504 million.
