GKN Aerospace has delivered the first modernized RM12 engine under the RM12EP (Enhanced Performance) program carried out for the Swedish Armed Forces. The program, valued at approximately £32 million, aims to improve the operational efficiency of JAS 39 Gripen C/D aircraft.
GKN Aerospace has reached a significant milestone in the modernization process initiated for the RM12 engine fleet. The delivery of the first engine, completed at the company’s facilities in Trollhättan, Sweden, was carried out in line with the objectives of increasing engine thrust and reducing life cycle costs.
RM12EP Program and Technical Upgrades
The RM12EP (Enhanced Performance) program provides comprehensive technical updates aimed at extending the operational life of the JAS 39 Gripen C/D platforms and enhancing the aircraft’s combat effectiveness. This modernization process primarily focuses on the integration of advanced turbine components that increase engine thrust and optimize fuel efficiency.
As part of the technical upgrades, the renewed engine control software modernizes the system’s digital infrastructure, enabling more precise performance management. Additionally, the durability of key components has been improved, extending engine operating times. As a result, these enhancements carried out by GKN Aerospace not only increase engine performance but also reduce life cycle costs, offering a long-term sustainment solution for the Swedish Air Force.
Strategic Partnership and Future Plans
As the type certificate holder of the RM12 engine that powers the Gripen C/D aircraft, GKN Aerospace continues its strategic cooperation with the Swedish Air Force. In addition, the company is responsible for the production and system support of the RM16 engine used in the next-generation Gripen E/F platforms.
Within the scope of the program carried out in coordination with GE and Saab, the remaining modernized engines are planned to be delivered regularly according to the established schedule. These efforts, launched in 2019, aim to ensure that the Gripen C/D platform remains capable of meeting future operational requirements.
