Germany-based Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has completed the construction of the fourth Type 209 submarine for the Egyptian Navy. The purchase agreement, which includes a new conventional submarine called the S44, was signed in 2011. The first platform was delivered in December 2016, the second submarine in August 2017, and the third submarine called the “S43” was delivered in April 2020.
The submarines, which are scheduled to carry out maritime defence as well as information collection and surveillance missions, have a low acoustic trial range and can reach a maximum range of 8,200 nautical miles at cruising speed.
Under the deal, the fourth submarine will be delivered to Egypt in 2021.
