The Spearfish torpedo, modernized by BAE Systems, is one last step away from the Royal Navy launch. Developed Spearfish will be launched in late 2020 following extensive trials in Scotland.The United Kingdom, which has been working on the modernisation of torpedoes for nearly six years, has invested £270m for ammunition.
The Royal Navy's Spearfish modernization includes a new warhead, a safer fuel system, an advanced electronic command control centre and a fibre-optic routing connection.
Modernised as basic ammunition against ships and submarines, Spearfish conducts firing tests at the HMS Sutherland frigate. The torpedo, which moves at low speed to reduce its acoustic track in general use, suddenly accelerates as it approaches the target.
The modernized variant of the munitions, which was first launched in 2001, will be tested at BUTEC last before it entered service.
