Taiwan has sent information request documents to Thales and Raytheon for phased-out array radars from ship. The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology was developing the local Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) for the frigate the country would build with its own resources. After the studies, it became clear that the system produced by the institute was heavy for the ship.
Taiwan has identified Thales and Raytheon as potential suppliers for the ship-induced phased array radar to be equipped in new frigates.
In 2016, the Taiwanese Government announced that it had allocated a budget of US$14.59 billion for 12 warships to be built between 2018 and 2040, to include platforms developed with local resources in the country's navy.
The radars will be used on new ships to be built. If everything works as planned, the contract for radar will be signed in 2022 and the first ship will be delivered in 2026.
