Austria will buy a general-purpose helicopter from Italy. Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner says they plan to buy 18 AW169M helicopters from Italy for €300m. Italian company Leonardo was chosen from among the U.S. and German companies.
The AW169Ms, the military variable of the AW169 helicopter, will replace the Alouette III helicopters, which have been in inventory for nearly 50 years.
The helicopter with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW210A engines is equipped with electro-optical systems. The AW169M can be used for logistical support, reconnaissance, special force operations, command and control, medical evacuation missions.
Austria's Defence Ministry said the Alouette IIIs will retire by the end of 2023.
