Anduril will add new capacity to U.S. Virginia-class submarine production with Arsenal-2, which will be built in Baltimore County. Initial operations at the facility are expected to begin in 2030, creating 3,100 direct jobs.
The U.S. Navy awarded Anduril a contract worth up to $2.9 billion. Payments are tied to production outcomes. Together with Anduril’s $3.7 billion private investment, total investment in the U.S. submarine industrial base is expected to reach $6.6 billion.
Production Capacity to Increase with Arsenal-2
At the centre of the investment is a new production facility called Arsenal-2. The facility will produce complex components and large-scale assemblies for Virginia-class submarines. The manufactured components will be delivered to Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding for final assembly. In addition, Arsenal-2 is also intended to contribute to the expansion of the U.S. submarine industrial base. This contribution is needed to meet fleet requirements and AUKUS commitments.
Before Arsenal-2 becomes operational, Anduril is establishing a new 160,000-square-foot facility in Orange County, California, to develop production processes. The new facility is expected to provide Arsenal-2 with roughly two years of operational preparation. Moreover, it will support the prototyping and production of critical maritime components. These include Virginia-class submarine test assets and torpedo tubes. SUBSAFE qualification activities will also be carried out there.
Arsenal-2 is planned to be built at the Tradepoint Atlantic site in Sparrows Point, Baltimore County, Maryland. The project is expected to create around 3,100 direct jobs. It will also support more than 11,000 indirect jobs. Initial operations are expected to begin in 2030.
Arsenal-2 is being designed as a modern shipbuilding facility based on software-defined production and advanced manufacturing technologies. By placing manufacturing, assembly, testing and integration processes closer together, the facility aims to reduce production bottlenecks. In addition, Anduril’s ArsenalOS platform will manage production, material flows, quality control and documentation through a single digital system. Digital work instructions and automation are also expected to support production processes and accelerate the training of new employees.
