A memorandum of understanding signed in Madrid brings Navantia and L&T together under India’s four-ship LPD programme.
Navantia and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have established a long-term cooperation framework for the Indian Navy’s LPD programme, which covers the procurement of four amphibious ships. Under the agreement, L&T’s shipbuilding capabilities will be combined with Navantia’s experience in the design and construction of naval vessels. The agreement will also bring together L&T’s engineering capabilities with Navantia’s expertise in the design and construction of surface ships and submarines. The partnership aims to contribute to the development of large-scale shipbuilding capabilities in India.
Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, said the cooperation would combine L&T’s shipbuilding capabilities with Navantia’s experience in naval ship design and construction. He added that the partnership is expected to help strengthen India’s maritime capabilities and support the domestic construction of similar platforms.

Navantia’s experience in the LHD field, gained through the Juan Carlos I developed for the Spanish Navy and the Canberra and Adelaide ships of the Royal Australian Navy, will be used in the project. The four platforms are planned to support amphibious operations as well as humanitarian assistance, disaster response and other naval missions.
Navantia’s Director of Operations and Business Development, Gonzalo Mateo-Guerrero, highlighted that the parties’ different areas of expertise would be used to develop solutions tailored to the needs of the Indian Navy. It was also noted that Navantia would provide long-term support to L&T, the Indian Navy and other relevant stakeholders throughout the entire life cycle of the LPDs.
