January 25, 2018A First in the World: All-aluminum Engine For Aircraft
Russian Novosibirsk State Technical University has developed an aircraft engine fully made of aluminium. One-of-a-kind engine has become 50 kg lighter than its predecessor and weighs about 200 kg. Its power has increased by 10 percent to 400 hp while fuel consumption has been reduced by 15 percent.
Previously, all engine parts were made of steel, especially the ones exposed to the highest loads, such as crankshaft flywheel and cylinder barrels. The new design, on the other hand, is fully made of aluminium using a special technology of plasma-electrolytic oxidation (peo). Ground tests were successfully completed on 19 January and the new engine will be installed in the Yak-52 to conduct flight tests.
