US to Retire Strategic Bombers

The end of the road seems for the B-1B Lancers, which became one of the symbolic aircraft of the Western Block during the Cold War period.

According to the statement made by the US Department of Defence, there will be a temporary decrease in the strategic bomber power of the US Air Force temporarily. For the platforms that have been in use for many years and whose sustainment costs have increased, the ministry has made a decision. The Air Force and the US plan to transfer the budget for the maintenance of aging B-1Bs to the next-generation B-21 Raider project and to acquire higher amounts from this platform. In this context, 17 of the platforms with an average flight time of around 9,700 are retired in 2021 and stored in the 309th AMARG stationed in Tucson, Arizona. If the decision is finalized, the number of B-1B Lancers, whose service lives are extended until 2037, will decrease from 62 to 45 in the USA inventory.
