UK Considers Temporary Harpoon Solution

The United Kingdom may go for a temporary solution to bridge the gap between the retirement of GWS60 Harpo on (UK designation for UGM-84B) and the planned introduction of a Future Cruise/Anti-Ship Weapon according to the Jane’s.

All 13 Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigates and three out of six Type 45 destroyers are fitted with the GWS 60/Harpoon Block 1C. The system is procured in the 1980s. It had originally been planned to retire at the end of 2018, but it is due to be retired in 2023 after life extension.

FC/ASW is expected to be in service in the 2030s. Answering UK House of Commons Defence Committee/French National Assembly inquiry for the FC/ASW programme, senior Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials confirmed that market survey activity is under way.
