Designed to operate year-round in the challenging conditions of the Baltic Sea, the Pohjanmaa-class corvettes will form the backbone of the Finnish Navy’s future operational capabilities.
Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has launched the 3rd Pohjanmaa-class multipurpose corvette, built for the Finnish Navy at Rauma Shipyard. The launch of the third corvette marks a significant milestone in the Squadron 2020 project, highlighting Finland’s expertise and production capacity in military shipbuilding. The Pohjanmaa-class multipurpose corvettes are 117 metres long, 16.5 metres wide and have a draught of 5 metres. They are designed to operate with a crew of 70.

Outfitting work on the first two corvettes is ongoing, while the keel of the fourth corvette was laid in August. Construction of the multipurpose corvettes is progressing simultaneously, with experience gained during serial production helping to refine manufacturing processes and improve efficiency. RMC President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mika Nieminen stated that lessons learned from the construction of each vessel are being applied to subsequent ships as the project progresses, contributing to improved construction processes, greater production efficiency and stronger military shipbuilding capabilities. Nieminen emphasised that close and productive cooperation between the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, the Finnish Navy, Saab, project partners and the entire project team has facilitated the construction process.

Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) continues to build four Pohjanmaa-class multipurpose corvettes for the Finnish Navy under the Squadron 2020 project. With all four vessels currently under construction, the project is reported to have generated more than 3,600 person-years of direct employment in Finland. The construction of the corvettes is also said to have significantly strengthened the country’s maritime industry, military shipbuilding activities and defence industry expertise. Designed to operate year-round in the challenging conditions of the Baltic Sea, the Pohjanmaa-class corvettes meet the requirements of modern naval warfare and will form the operational backbone of the Finnish Navy in the future. Brigadier General (Engineering) Juha-Matti Ylitalo, Deputy Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, stated that the launch of the third corvette demonstrates progress in this key project for naval operational capabilities. Ylitalo emphasised that continuously strengthening cooperation between Rauma Shipyard, weapons systems supplier Saab and the Finnish Navy, as the end user of the systems, will help ensure that the targeted capabilities are achieved. Outfitting work on the 3rd corvette will continue following its launch.
