The “brain” and “eyes” of the German Navy’s new generation MEKO A-200 DEU frigates will be entrusted to Saab. The Swedish defence giant has signed a critical cooperation agreement with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems for the integration of the 9LV combat management system and advanced radar equipment on the vessels, under a contract valued at 8.7 billion Swedish kronor.
The procurement of MEKO A-200 DEU frigates, approved by the German Bundestag Budget Committee, is currently reshaping the nation’s maritime power. It is worth noting that we covered the background of this project and the German Navy’s procurement process last month. Within this framework, Saab has signed an 8.7 billion SEK contract for critical systems for the German Navy’s new MEKO A-200 DEU frigates.
Saab’s technological infrastructure was chosen for the project, which aims to strengthen German naval power. The agreement covers the supply of combat management systems, sensor integration and composite structure elements for the ships.
Leading the systems that will take the ships’ operational capability to the highest level is the 9LV Naval Combat Management System, which coordinates all sensors and weapons under a single roof. The integrated fire control system, which provides high accuracy, will be supported by the Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face radar for long range surveillance and the Sea Giraffe 1X radar for multi mission tasks. Composite superstructures that reduce the ships’ radar cross section and various passive sensors are also included in the delivery package.
Delivery Schedule and Strategic Goals
The ships will be built in Germany under TKMS as the prime contractor. Saab’s system integration and outfitting activities are planned to be completed between 2029 and 2032. The contract also includes an option for equipping additional ships if needed later in the project.
Commenting on the matter, Saab CEO and President Michael Johansson emphasised the importance of the partnership with the German Armed Forces. He also stated that they are proud to carry out these deliveries, which will significantly enhance the navy’s air defence, anti submarine warfare and surface warfare capabilities in cooperation with TKMS.
This procurement decision stands out within the framework of efforts to strengthen NATO’s naval defence capability against underwater threats in the North Sea and Atlantic regions.
