The Czech Air Force has taken a major step forward in its tactical airlift capabilities. The first C-390 Millennium was officially handed over during a ceremony at Prague Kbely Air Base, and after completing its logistics preparation phase, the aircraft has now been declared ready for operational duties. The delivery, which came just 20 months after the contract was signed, marks a critical milestone that will reshape the Czech Republic’s capacity for NATO missions and emergency response operations.
The new platform was quickly rolled into operational readiness following its arrival. Formally delivered on 16 July at Prague Kbely Air Base, the aircraft stands out from its rivals in the same class with a payload capacity that is 26 tonnes higher and a cruising speed of 470 knots.
Record-Breaking Delivery in 20 Months
The fact that this delivery took place only 20 months after the contract was signed is a testament to Embraer’s efficiency in supply chain management and production. The Czech Republic has been a strategic partner in the C-390 programme from the very beginning, contributing to the aircraft’s development. Brigadier General Jaroslav Falta, Commander of the Air Transport Base, highlighted the advantages the aircraft brings, noting that the C-390 Millennium will significantly enhance their ability to transport heavy and bulky loads over long distances—a major asset for both NATO operations and disaster response efforts.
A Multi-Mission Platform: The Embraer KC-390
Widely regarded as the most modern platform in its class, the C-390 Millennium is capable of carrying out a diverse range of missions, including cargo and troop transport, paratroop and equipment airdrops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, and humanitarian aid operations. Equipped with an aerial refuelling system, it can also serve as a tanker, and its ability to operate from unpaved runways gives the Czech Air Force a level of operational flexibility that will serve it well for years to come.
A Growing Global Fleet
With the Czech Republic now on board, the list of C-390 operators includes Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, Uzbekistan, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Slovakia, and Lithuania. Fully compliant with NATO standards, the aircraft continues to be the next-generation transport choice for air forces around the world. Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, commented on the delivery, emphasising that the aircraft will boost the readiness and effectiveness of the Czech Armed Forces.
The Czech delivery process mirrors the operational readiness strategies of other C-390 users in the region. Hungary, for instance, has similarly focused on ensuring logistical continuity through a direct technical support framework established with Embraer.
