Rheinmetall unveiled its next-generation GMF 140 guided missile frigate, measuring 140 metres in length with a displacement of over 6,000 tonnes, on August 3, 2026.
According to the company’s statement, the GMF 140 was developed to deliver unmatched capability across the full spectrum of modern naval warfare. Designed to meet the evolving operational requirements of NATO and allied navies, the platform aims to establish a new benchmark for survivability, lethality and mission flexibility in the global frigate market.
Purpose-built for operations in the world’s most demanding threat environments, the GMF 140 combines advanced air and ballistic missile defence, anti-submarine warfare and long-range strike capabilities within a highly survivable, digitally integrated and minimally manned platform. The ship’s design is optimised for blue-water operations while retaining the flexibility to support expeditionary, littoral and coalition missions.
Air and Ballistic Missile Defence
According to Rheinmetall, the GMF 140 is equipped with US-sourced primary radar options that provide exceptional detection, tracking and engagement performance against conventional air threats, hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles, along with the AEGIS Combat System and a 64-cell Strike-Length Vertical Launch System (VLS). This configuration is said to provide a level of battlespace awareness and fire control typically available only on significantly larger surface combatants. The ship can also be offered with alternative combat management systems such as the Lockheed Martin CMS330 Combat Management System; this open-architecture system is described as supporting the integration of European sensor and weapon systems.
GMF 140 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Capabilities
Designed from the keel up as a true multi-domain combatant, the GMF 140 incorporates advanced anti-submarine warfare capabilities, a low-signature hull, integrated acoustic management, GMF 140 hull-mounted and towed sonar systems, and support for embarked maritime helicopters and unmanned systems.
