The procurement process for the F-16 Block 70, officially announced by U.S. Ambassador to Peru Bernie Navarro, is set to shift the strategic balance in the region. The Peruvian Air Force will acquire 24 next-generation fighter jets. Moreover, it will retain full operational control over these aircraft.
The deal, notable for its total cost and comprehensive logistics package, was sealed with the signing of technical agreements on April 20, 2026. This paves the way for Peru to operate the most advanced fourth-generation air fleet in South America.
Technical Agreement and Procurement Process
Following negotiations between the Peruvian government and the United States, a formal letter of selection for the Lockheed Martin-produced aircraft was issued on April 14. The process officially entered into force with the signing of the agreements. In addition, the transfer of the initial payment took place on April 20. This deal confirms the arrival of F-16 Block 70 platforms in the region. As a result, it brings Peru’s current air inventory up to the highest technological standards.
Operational Independence and Training
In a statement from the U.S. Embassy, it was emphasised that this procurement is not merely an aircraft purchase but a long-term engineering and maintenance partnership. The agreement establishes a framework whereby command, control, and ownership rights of the delivered aircraft will belong entirely to Peru. Furthermore, maintenance activities will be conducted at Peruvian facilities by Peruvian personnel.
Regional Security and Strategy
Equipped with next-generation radars and enhanced munitions capacity, the aircraft will not only ensure the security of Peruvian airspace but also enhance the country’s capacity to combat transnational crime. Under the project, approximately 20 U.S. technical experts are planned to serve in Peru over a 10-year period. They will provide training and integration support.
