A new Gallium Nitride (GaN) chip, developed to multiply data transmission speeds in military radar systems, has set a new record in defence electronics by cutting the time from lab to field to under six months. Manufactured by Northrop Grumman, this microchip is one of the first solutions capable of fully exploiting the high‑frequency W‑band spectrum, which enables ultra‑secure wireless data transmission for satellites and radars.
The semiconductor technology, developed at the Redondo Beach facility in California, has been designed to support both military communication networks and next‑generation 5G/6G civilian infrastructure.
Uninterrupted Power and Efficiency at High Frequencies
Despite its small size, the GaN chip features a highly efficient architecture that amplifies wireless signals, replacing bulky, energy‑hungry equipment. Thanks to the high‑frequency nature of the W‑band spectrum, military radars gain the ability to receive and transmit far more detailed data many times faster than conventional systems.
The high power density provided by Gallium Nitride technology increases signal clarity for military units in the field while maximising the security of wireless data flow against cyber threats.

This record‑breaking speed in semiconductor R&D was achieved through the Microelectronics Commons California DREAMS Hub programme, funded by the US Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. This consortium, in which Northrop Grumman is a leading partner, aims to minimise the journey of critical microchip innovations from the lab to the front line and the market through collaboration between industry, government and academia.
