New Battery will Improve Korean Subs

The Republic of Korea is nearing the end of its efforts to increase the operational range of submarines. With new batteries developed, the operational range of submarines will be doubled.

The batteries were developed for a new generation submarine project. Lithium-ion based batteries are two times more efficient than lead-acid precursors. Following the 30-month development phase, the systems passed the technological readiness tests and took a step closer to the integration phase. The Republic of Korea procurement agency DAPA said in a statement that the new technology will increase the prestige of Korea in the construction of submarines and this will be reflected in the commercial sectors positively.

Samsung SDI, the world's largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer, has developed the battery module to be integrated into the submarines. Hanwha Land Systems will carry out the integration of the systems. The systems will first be integrated into KSS-III class platforms.
