Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi

Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that his country’s plans to deploy missiles to Yonaguni Island, located approximately 110 kilometers east of Taiwan, are progressing according to schedule at a time when political tensions between China and Taiwan continue. Minister Koizumi stated that this military reinforcement would strengthen Japan’s defense capabilities rather than escalate regional tensions.

Defense Minister Koizumi: “A Step That Will Reduce Tension”

According to a report in The Japan Times, Defense Minister Koizumi spoke to reporters on Sunday after inspecting the Ground Self-Defense Force garrison on Yonaguni Island in Okinawa Prefecture.

Koizumi argued that claims suggesting the deployment would heighten regional tensions were unfounded, saying, “This deployment may help reduce the likelihood of an armed attack on our country.”

The Role of Yonaguni Island in Regional Security

Japan is carrying out this move as part of a broader military buildup across its southern island chain. The medium-range surface-to-air missiles planned to be deployed on Yonaguni Island clearly reflect Tokyo’s concerns about China’s growing military power and the potential for a conflict over Taiwan.

This first visit by Minister Koizumi to Yonaguni is regarded as a sign of Japan’s determination to strengthen the defense of its southwestern border.

Bakan Koizumi‘nin Yonaguni‘ye yaptığı bu ilk ziyaret, Japonya‘nın güneybatı sınır savunmasını güçlendirme konusundaki kararlılığının bir göstergesi olarak kabul ediliyor.
