Embraer has announced the successful completion of the delivery process for the C-390 Millennium multi-mission military transport aircraft to the Hungarian Air Force. With the delivery of the second and final aircraft at a ceremony held at Hungary’s Kecskemét Air Base, the country became the world’s first global customer to receive the entire fleet of this modern military platform.
Under the contract signed in November 2020, Hungary had ordered a total of two C-390 Millennium aircraft. The completion of this delivery fundamentally modernizes Hungary’s air logistics capability, filling the gap left by the country’s old Soviet-era An-26 transport aircraft. By doing so, Hungary became the second NATO member, after Portugal, to incorporate the C-390 into its inventory, significantly enhancing the Alliance’s strategic transportation and operational flexibility.
High Success in C-390 Operations
With this modernization, the Hungarian Air Force has also achieved significant operational success. Since entering service at the end of 2024, the first Hungarian aircraft has carried out a wide range of missions with a completion rate of over 99%. This high rate demonstrates the platform’s operational reliability and Hungary’s efficiency in operating the aircraft. With the delivery of the second aircraft, Hungary became the first C-390 operator to receive all aircraft under its contract. By doing so, Hungary again became the second NATO member, after Portugal, to incorporate the C-390 into its inventory, significantly enhancing the Alliance’s strategic transport and operational flexibility.
Medical Capability and Multi-Mission Flexibility
The C-390s delivered to Hungary are not limited to cargo and troop transport; they can also be used in the KC-390 (Tanker) configuration and are capable of aerial refueling (AAR) of other aircraft, including Hungarian Gripen fighter jets.
The most notable feature is that Hungary’s C-390s are the first in the world to be equipped with a modular roll-on/roll-off Intensive Care Unit (ICU) system. This system allows the aircraft’s cargo area to be quickly converted into a high-standard emergency medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) center, enabling the transport of patients requiring critical care. This delivered fleet is regarded as a critical investment that maximizes Hungary’s preparedness for national security and NATO commitments.
