Estonia is doubling its strike depth with new batteries capable of firing tactical ballistic missiles with a range of 290 kilometers. The latest agreement with Hanwha Aerospace has now formalized the procurement of three additional Chunmoo systems, a move that is set to shift the firepower balance in the Baltic region.
Focused on strengthening the security architecture in the Baltic region, Estonia has taken its defense cooperation with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace to a strategic level. An intergovernmental (G2G) agreement was signed on May 11 between the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI). Under this contract, three additional Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher systems will be added to the Estonian Defence Forces’ inventory.
Pinpoint Accuracy with Three Different Munition Types
This new package serves as a follow-up to the main contract worth €290 million signed in December 2025, supporting the country’s deterrent capability through munition variety. As part of the procurement process, Estonia will gain the ability to use 239mm CGR-080 guided rockets with a range of 80 kilometers, as well as CTM-MR and CTM-290 tactical ballistic missiles capable of reaching 290 kilometers. Built on an 8×8 wheeled platform, the Chunmoo system emphasizes survivability—one of the most critical aspects of the modern battlefield—thanks to its high mobility.
A Growing Strategic Partnership
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur described the procurement of the additional systems as a major capability upgrade, highlighting the operational effectiveness of the cooperation with South Korean partners. Meanwhile, Hanwha Aerospace President Jae-il Son noted that this order represents a strategic step in expanding their presence in the Baltic and Nordic regions.
Following the K9 self-propelled howitzers already in its inventory, the Estonian military is now integrating the Chunmoo systems into its operational structure. In doing so, it continues to standardize its land systems portfolio around South Korean technology. With rapid delivery and high product quality standing out as key features, these systems are expected to add a new force multiplier to the region’s defense ecosystem.
