The Dornier 228, one of the most reliable platforms in the aviation world, is set to expand its operational boundaries with the Do228 NXT – an aircraft that integrates the latest avionics systems and a modernised cabin design. General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA‑ATS) broke Germany’s long‑standing silence in aircraft production with a launch ceremony held on 8 June 2026 in Oberpfaffenhofen. At this event, they presented this multi‑role turboprop platform to the global defence and civil aviation market.
A New Era in Aviation with the Do228 NXT
The Do228 NXT retains the flight characteristics of its predecessor while being redesigned to adapt to the digitalised combat and operational environment. Its success is particularly notable in critical missions such as maritime surveillance, medical evacuation (MedEvac) and disaster response. Additionally, the aircraft now takes that success to the next level with next‑generation mission equipment and a cost‑optimised supply chain.
Industry Reactions and Future Vision
At the event, attended by around 500 industry representatives, the aircraft’s special camouflage‑themed livery drew considerable attention. The company’s top management also underlined their confidence in the project. GA‑ATS Managing Director Florian Rohe stated that the aircraft is not just a technical achievement but also a product of the team’s passion for aviation. Meanwhile, Harald Robl, CEO of General Atomics Europe, emphasised that the resumption of domestic production in Germany is a strategic gain for the defence industry.
The aircraft’s balance of performance and cost makes the Do228 NXT a competitive option for both military and law enforcement agencies as well as public institutions.
