The Royal Danish Navy has completed DANEX 2026 after testing its ability to respond to threats above, on and below the water. The exercise involved 650 personnel, three frigates, around 10 smaller naval units, helicopters, and air, surface, and underwater drones.
The exercise was conducted in Danish waters and consisted of three phases. The first focused on training basic skills. The second included a port visit in Copenhagen, an Open Ship event, the DANEX sports tournament and a Naval Church service. The final phase involved an intensive scenario around Kalundborg, Middelfart and Anholt.
DANEX 2026 and Uncrewed Systems
Air, surface and underwater drones were used during DANEX 2026. The exercise covered maritime surveillance, enforcement of Danish sovereignty and the ability to respond to unforeseen events above, on and below the surface.
During the final three days, participants were not informed of the scenario in advance. Rear Admiral Søren Kjeldsen, Chief of the Royal Danish Navy, said the personnel worked together to solve the tasks they encountered.
The stated purpose of DANEX was to demonstrate the Royal Danish Navy’s ability to counter threats in a national context and deter potential adversaries.
Kjeldsen said the exercise focused on strengthening maritime security and training personnel at sea and ashore in surveillance, enforcement of sovereignty and response to unforeseen events above, on and below the surface.
DANEX 2026 and Live Firing
The exercise also included live firing. The firing activity was conducted at the range off Sjælands Odde. Following the completion of DANEX 2026, the Royal Danish Navy returned to its normal activities.
