India’s defence export sector has hit another milestone. Hyderabad-based Sigma Advanced Systems Limited has signed a $104.9 million (roughly INR 1,013 crore) export contract with a North American customer to supply 147,000 units of 155mm base bleed artillery shell bodies.
The system in question extends the reach of conventional artillery by up to 30 percent, using base-bleed gas technology to cut aerodynamic drag and it’s landed Sigma a order that’s drawing attention across the global supply chain.
From M107 Bodies to Extended-Range Technology
Sigma, listed on both the BSE and NSE and formerly known as Megasoft Limited, expects to complete deliveries within six to twelve months. The contract marks a step up the value chain for the company: having previously supplied 155mm fuzes and standard M107 shell bodies, Sigma is now producing more advanced munitions that bring together aerodynamics, energetics and propulsion technology in a single system.
Conventional artillery shells lose range to drag and turbulence at the base of the projectile in flight. Base bleed shells solve this with a gas-generating unit at the rear that reduces that drag, pushing effective range out to 30–40 kilometres all while remaining fully compatible with NATO-standard 155mm howitzers already in service.
A Bigger Foothold in the Global Supply Chain
The order is expected to be margin-accretive, adding to the company’s EBITDA. Commenting on the deal, Sigma CEO Sunil Kalidindi said defence manufacturing is built on trust earned through consistent delivery and quality, adding that the contract reflects the confidence global customers place in Sigma’s manufacturing capabilities.
