South Korea’s first domestically developed strategic-class unmanned aerial vehicle (MUAV) has rolled off the mass production line and officially exited the factory. The Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) platform is preparing to enter service with the Republic of Korea Air Force in 2027 and begin operational missions. South Korea has elevated its domestic defense industry drive to a strategic level. In the MALE UAV (MUAV) project developed with national resources, the first mass-produced platform was unveiled to the public during a rollout ceremony held at the Korean Air Technology Center in Busan. This step marks a significant milestone in the MUAV mass production process, and the MUAV production rollout represents a new era for aerospace technology.
Manned–Unmanned Teaming Vision
Speaking at the ceremony, Air Force Chief of Staff General Sohn Seok-rak emphasized that the MUAV is not merely a surveillance asset but a critical component of South Korea’s future manned–unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concept. He highlighted that in modern conflicts, UAVs have evolved from auxiliary tools into primary combat assets that can determine the course of warfare, underlining the platform’s strategic importance. He also noted that success in MUAV mass production will provide a decisive advantage to the military. In addition, the MUAV production rollout underlines the Republic of Korea’s commitment to technological advancement.
Technical Features and Capabilities of the MUAV
Developed under the leadership of Korean Air in cooperation with DAPA, LIG Nex1, and Hanwha Systems, the MUAV stands out with a localization rate of up to 90%, showcasing the scale of national contribution and the success of the production program. - Size and Power: The platform is 13 meters long with a wingspan of 26 meters and is powered by a 1,200-horsepower turboprop engine.
- Altitude and Endurance: It can operate at altitudes of 10–12 km (approximately 40,000 feet) and remain airborne for more than 24 hours.
- Sensor Capability: Equipped with advanced sensor packages capable of high-resolution imaging and radar detection from distances exceeding 100 km.
- Strategic Intelligence: Collected data can be shared in real time across all branches to enhance the speed and effectiveness of joint operations.
Delivery Schedule
Within the scope of the project, which has a budget of 980 billion won (approximately $726 million), mass production continues. Following acceptance tests conducted by the Air Force, the platforms will be gradually inducted into service starting in 2027. With full operational capability, South Korea will gain an independent, real-time intelligence capability, particularly for monitoring strategic targets in North Korea. Moreover, the MUAV production rollout is anticipated to redefine aerial surveillance standards in the region.
