The Sikorsky-Boeing SB>1 DEFIANT™ helicopter achieved first flight at Sikorsky's West Palm Beach, Florida site. The coaxial helicopter— which is part of the Army’s Joint Multi-Role technology demonstration program aimed at helping the service define requirements for a medium-lift Future Vertical Lift aircraft — took off at 7:47 a.m. and flew for more than 30 minutes. It successfully performed low-speed manoeuvres.
DEFIANT is designed to fly at nearly twice the speed and has twice the range of conventional helicopters.
The helicopter is participating in the Army's Joint Multi-Role-Medium Technology Demonstrator program. Data from DEFIANT will help the Army develop requirements for new utility helicopters expected to enter service in the early 2030s.
