Otokar’s Mediaş plant has grown into a key hub for Romania’s defence industry, and following the takeover, it opened its doors to a senior official for the first time. Romania’s Minister of National Defence, Radu-Dinel Miruță, visited the facility to review the current state of the COBRA II program running on its production line. The visit also drew attention to the company’s growing footprint in Europe. During the tour, officials briefed the minister on technical details of the armored tactical wheeled vehicle program and how it ties into the operational needs of the Romanian armed forces.
First Contact Since the Takeover
Having acquired Automecanica S.A. Mediaş to launch armored vehicle production in Romania, Otokar became the only Turkish defence company manufacturing armored vehicles within EU borders. The visit by Minister Miruță and his delegation to the Mediaş plant marked the first high-level official contact since that acquisition closed. It also gave officials a firsthand look at the production milestones the plant had already reached before the visit.
290 Vehicles Delivered From the Mediaş Plant
As the delegation toured the production lines, discussions centered on the 1,059-unit COBRA II contract Otokar is fulfilling for Romania’s Ministry of Defence. Company officials said the 4×4 tactical wheeled vehicle program remains on schedule, with 290 vehicles delivered from the Mediaş plant to date.
Özüner: “We’re Moving Forward as a Team, Systematically”
Speaking after the visit, Otokar General Manager Aykut Özüner said production at the Mediaş plant continues to advance steadily in line with the company’s global growth strategy. He noted the pride the company takes in having armored vehicle manufacturing capability within the EU, calling the minister’s visit an important moment for the company and a clear sign of the trust placed in the Mediaş plant.
