A new decision was made on the Eurodrone Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) RPAS programme, developed with a subsidiary of the German, French, Italian and Spanish Governments.
Meeting at Airbus' facilities in Germany, French Defence Minister Florance Parly and her German counterpart Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer called on member states to launch the next phase of the drone operation in 2021. Ministers said the financial problems in the programme will be resolved soon.
Disagreements over the cost of the air platform had delayed the formal launch of development and production.
In 2015, European countries set a budget of €7.1 billion for the project, which the United States announced as its counterpart to the Reaper Drone. A total of 63 drones will be produced from drones planned to be operated worldwide to support ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Detection and Reconnaissance) missions.
