The indigenous BORAN howitzer, which holds the world rate‑of‑fire record in its class with 12 accurate shots in 33 seconds, has reinforced its success in the European market with a deal in Albania. The 105 mm light towed howitzer, developed by Turkey, has been exported to Albania, another NATO member, following North Macedonia, expanding its export network.
The 105 mm air‑transportable light towed howitzer MKE BORAN, developed with domestic and national resources, has been actively in service with the Turkish Armed Forces for years. MKE BORAN was first exported to Bangladesh in 2024. In 2025, it entered the inventory of North Macedonia, and now its next destination is another NATO member and European country: Albania.
This export marks the first defence industry contract signed between two Allied nations ahead of the NATO Summit to be held in Turkey. Under the agreement, Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi (MKE) will supply the Albanian armed forces with 6 BORAN howitzers and various quantities of ammunition.
Flexibility and Speed on the Battlefield
Weighing in at 1,775 kilograms, BORAN is one of the lightest howitzers in the world and stands out with its logistical advantages. The system can be rapidly transported to any desired location by air via Sikorsky S‑70 and Chinook helicopters, or by ground using heavy‑lift vehicles.
One of the key features that sets BORAN apart from its competitors is its ability to be ready to fire in under a minute and to fire while still on its wheels. The system also features GPS‑assisted fire control and panoramic sight capability, offering more effective and faster solutions on the battlefield compared to conventional systems.
Having attracted the attention of many countries across Asia and Europe, BORAN continues its global success in the defence industry with its high export potential.
