The Republic of Korea Navy’s second Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship has been launched on 14 May at the shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. in Busan. With a length of 199 metres and a width of 31 metres, ROKS Marado is expected to be commissioned in 2020.
Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) signed a contract with HHIC in 2014 worth about $380 million for the construction of Marado, the keel of which was then laid on 28 April 2017. This second vessel of Dokdo Class features several improvements such as a new navigation radar, infra-red sensors, fixed panel 3D surveillance radar and a new anti-ship missile system.
Marado's flight deck has also been adapted to accommodate the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey.
