Last Air Warfare Destroyer Commissioned

The Hobart-class anti-air warfare destroyers, built to replace the Adelaide-class frigates that have reached the end of their useful life, have come to an end.

The Royal Australian Navy commissioned HMAS Sydney (DDG 42), the third and final Hobart Class anti-air warfare destroyer. The fifth platform with the same name, the ship will be integrated into the fleet after the test and evaluation process.

The Hobart-class anti-air warfare destroyer was developed from the Navantia F100 design. The platforms procured under the SEA 4000 program have Aegis combat management system. Ships with 7,000 tons displacement equipped with 48 cells Mk 41 VLS, RIM-66 SM-2, RIM-162 ESSM, 2×4 RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, 1 Mark 45 Mod 4 127 mm main gun and two Mark 32 Mod 9 twin torpedo tubes. The ship also has 1x Mk 15 Phalanx and two 25 mm M242 Bushmaster guns with Typhoon mounts. The Hobart allows the operation of one 10-ton class naval helicopter.
