Croatia was aiming to buy second-hand F-16 fighter jets from Israel, but there was no approval for the sale from the United States.
Sweden has proposed 12 new Gripen C/D fighter jets to Croatia and the Saab company has offered strategic cooperation with the Croatian defence industry. If Croatia decides in Gripen, Saab will transfer technology to Croatia in relation to the plane. In addition, a Regional Aviation and Support Service Centre will be established in Croatia.
Croatian Defence Minister Damir Krsticevic announced in May 2019 that his country was close to the United States and Sweden in the purchase of aircraft because no agreement was reached with Israel.
