Presidency of Defence Industries (Savunma Sanayii Başkanlığı /SSB) started July with a surprise by announcing the domestic Sungur missile.
Developed by the studies of Roketsan and local subcontractors, Sungur is a low altitude air defence missile. In the announcement of the SSB, the system, which is stated to be successful in live-fire trials and ready to enter inventory, can be launched from moving vehicles. In addition to these, Sungur can be used in all kinds of ambient conditions including day and night; it can be integrated into land, air and sea platforms. In addition to launching 360 degrees, the system has the capability of target detection, diagnosis, identification and tracking.
According to C4Defence's information, Sungur has superior capabilities than the FIM-92 Stinger air defence missile, which is also actively used in the Turkish Armed Forces inventory. It is stated that the PorSav (Portable Air Defense Missile System) Project is currently continuing as a separate process. The use of Sungur planned as vehicle-based is on the agenda. However, it is among the information that came to C4Defence that the system uses the missile developed for PorSav.
Its manoeuvrability offers Sungur high efficiency against aerial threats. The ammunition used in the system has the Titanium warhead technology, which is also used in AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. SSB also stated that Sungur is equipped with a sight that allows the target to be viewed from a long-range. There are some opinions that the defence industry backstage PorSav will have IIR (Imaging Infrared) seeker warhead. For this reason, there is an estimate that the Sungur system is guided to its target using IIR technology.
