Fincantieri has ceremonially delivered “Atlante,” the second unit of the Logistic Support Ship (LSS) class built for the Italian Navy. Constructed under a program managed by OCCAR, the ship will strengthen the navy’s logistical power with its replenishment-at-sea and multi-purpose operational capabilities.
Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri delivered the second Logistic Support Ship (LSS) “Atlante” (A5328), ordered within the framework of the Italian Navy’s fleet renewal plan, at a ceremony held at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard. The delivery, which took place on 19 December 2025, represents an important milestone in the multi-year strategic modernization program managed by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).
Strategic Logistics and Operational Flexibility
Atlante, which will operate together with “Vulcano,” the first ship of the class that entered service in 2021, will enhance the Italian Navy’s capacity to protect national interests, ensure Euro-Atlantic security, and contribute to international peace missions. The ship was designed to serve as a “dual-use” platform not only in military missions but also in civil defense, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief operations.
Developed by the Temporary Business Group (RTI) formed by the partnership of Fincantieri and Leonardo, the ship is equipped with a high level of automation and innovative systems. Atlante presents an environmentally friendly operational profile thanks to low-emission generators, electric propulsion motors, and advanced biological waste control systems.
Technical Capacity and Mission Equipment
With an approximate displacement of 27,000 tons and an overall length of 193 meters, Atlante can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots and accommodate a total of 235 personnel, including crew and specialist staff. The ship’s operational capabilities include advanced replenishment-at-sea (RAS) systems capable of transferring liquid and solid cargo to naval units while underway, comprehensive maintenance and repair workshops for the technical support of other ships, and a fully equipped hospital complex including sections such as an operating room and radiology. In line with its multidimensional mission profile, the platform can serve as a base for intelligence and electronic warfare operations; it can support search and rescue activities with its flight deck and special boats, and it is equipped with technical systems capable of carrying out operations for the recovery of vehicles and materials from underwater or surface environments.
