Three F-35B Lightning aircraft belonging to the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom have arrived at the Fleet Readiness Centre Southeast (FRCSE) facility in Florida, USA, for corrosion inspection and structural improvement work.
According to a report in Forces News, the process, initiated to minimize the effects of salty air and sunlight exposure during naval missions, will involve the aircraft undergoing a PAIR II (Production Asset Inspection Requirement Level II) inspection.
180-Day Process Reduced to 60 Days
The airframes of F-35Bs, which operate under challenging sea conditions for approximately eight months during aircraft carrier missions, are subjected to a comprehensive examination including corrosion mapping and component repair. FRCSE, using specialized techniques, reduces this maintenance and repair schedule, which normally takes 180 days, to 60 days, maintaining the operational readiness of the aircraft.
Critical Technology and Personnel Training
The maintenance work is not limited to physical repairs; FRCSE experts also share their experience with British personnel regarding the F-35’s advanced surface coatings and critical systems such as ALIS (Autonomous Logistics Information System). This enhances the UK’s on-site maintenance capabilities during naval operations.
Captain Mike Windom, Commander of FRCSE, commented on the subject, saying, “FRCSE’s rapid line process is recognized in the F-35 community as an efficient and cost-effective solution for corrosion reduction. We are proud to help our British allies maintain maximum mission readiness for their aircraft.”
